ERROL GRIMA
Date of birth: July 18, 1978
Nationality: Maltese
Position: midfielder
Appearances for Club: 190
Goals for Club: 36
Errol made his debut in the
1993/94 season and has virtually made the number 10 shirt his ever since,
barring one season he spent with Nadur Y. where he enjoyed cup success
winning the Republic Cup and the Super Cup with the Youngsters and another
season spent with Xaghra United where he won the Second
Division championship and Knockout.
It is
frustrating that a player that is blessed with so much technical ability
and confidence has yet to reach his full potential as a player. He can play in an attacking midfield role as well as the position of
second striker. Nevertheless he is at his devastating best when he is
given a free role to roam all over the field.
His career
started in the Club's minor league teams where he contributed
significantly to the sides that swept everything in the early nineties. He
won the Under/14 championship, the Under/16 championship twice and the
Under/16 knockout twice. He
was also part of championship winning teams at the Under/18 and Under/21
levels. He was chosen as the G.F.A.'s Most Promising Player in the 1994/95
season, when he was just over 16 years of age. Many still remember his
performance in a 5-0 mauling of Sannat Lions in the G.F.A. Cup semi-final
that season. He picked the Lions' defense apart with his passing and
scored a goal himself for good measure. He spent several seasons in
the Sliema W. Youth Nursery and was on the Maltese Under/16 squad.
He was
instrumental in the Club's successes in recent years,
contributing in the cup triumphs with goals and assists. He scored twice against Xaghra United in the 6-2 Super Cup triumph of 1998/99 and was part of the
first division (premier format) team that ran away with the championship.
He was on the treble winning side of two seasons ago. Errol was on top
form at the end of the 2001/02 season on course to our third Super Cup triumph in
four years. Errol kept this form well into the 2002/03 season when the
Club won the Independence Cup and stormed to first place in the league.
However, a sudden drop in form for this player coincided with the Blacks'
loss of first place to eventual champions Nadur Y. Errol carried the team
in the early part of 2003/04 but ended the season on loan
with Xaghra United.
Errol
was part of the 2004/05 championship winning side. He made
several appearances in the first two rounds of league
play. His most significant contribution came in the first
round match against Kercem Ajax. The Blacks seemed headed
to their first defeat of the season when he grabbed a late
equalizer from close range.
Errol has
also been on occasion a member of the Gozo F.C. squad.
