Loreto
Scicluna's career with the Club goes back to the 1977/78 season when he
was a member of the minor league team that won the championship for the
Club. He saw first team action towards the end of the 1980/81 season. By
1982/83 he had established his place in the side, however, he had to
interrupt his career to pursue academic studies abroad. Aside from the
occasional appearance, Loreto was absent from the senior team until the
1993/94 season when he returned from abroad. He became team captain in the
1994/95 season and served in that role until the end of 2003/04.
Initially, a
left-winger, Loreto has featured in every position in the outfield,
recently alternating between defensive positions of libero or stopper and the
holding role in midfield. Although more noted for his consistent play,
Loreto did receive recognition for an exceptional season in 1994/95 when
he was chosen as the G.F.A. Footballer of the Year. He has since twice
been chosen as the Club's footballer of the year (1996/97 and 1998/99).
Loreto played in all eight cup
competitions won by the Club since 1998/99, captaining the side in seven
of them (tops for the Club). By lifting the 2003/04 Super Cup, Loreto
joined Melchior Cremona of Victoria Hotspurs as the only two players to
captain their side to four Super Cup triumphs. Loreto was a member of
the 2004/05 championship winning side.
Loreto also
played a role in Gozo F.C.'s climb from the lower divisions of the M.F.A.
and had the honour of captaining the side to the second division title in
1997/98.
