In March
Ghajnsielem F.C. kept up the pressure on the Youngsters by beating Qala
St. J. 6-0. Thus the Blacks completed the treble on the Qala side. This match was of
historic significance: it was the 400th match for Peter Caruana as head
coach of Ghajnsielem F.C.'s senior team. Peter's coaching career numbers are staggering.
No other coach in Club history has exceeded the 60 matches mark. Peter has
been on the winning side 217 times (drew 70 and lost 113). This is the
26th season (not consecutive) that Peter has coached the Blacks. Under Peter Caruana, the Club has won five first division
championships, three promotions (two as second division champions) and
nineteen cup competitions.
Peter failed
to add the
twentieth success in cup competitions this month because the Blacks lost
0-3 to Nadur Youngsters in the Jum il-Helsien Cup. Ghajnsielem F.C.
were making their fifth consecutive Jum il-Helsien Cup final appearance and sixth
overall, establishing new marks on both counts. The Blacks never looked
like adding to their sole success in this competition. They put on a
lethargic display which allowed the Youngsters to walk away with the Cup
without too much trouble. The Blacks dropped their third straight match to
Nadur this season without scoring a single goal.
Nadur also kept on course for the honour that matters most, the league
title. They hammered Zebbug Rovers 5-0 to go one point clear of the
Blacks at the top of the table. The Youngsters have three games left to
play, all against teams with nothing but pride left to play for: Qala St. J., Victoria H. and Xewkija T.
At the other
end of the table, Victoria Hotspurs all but assured themselves of first
division football with a resounding 7-0 victory over Xaghra United which put
them six points clear of the relegation zone. Xaghra seem
now destined for the drop to division two. They would join Qala St. J. who
were mathematically condemned for relegation after their 3-3 draw with the
Xewkija Tigers. This duo would be replaced by two of Gharb R., Sannat
Lions and Kercem Ajax. These three teams are locked in an
interesting battle at the top of the second division.
