October
started with a midweek match between Ghajnsielem and Xewkija Tigers.
This match looked destined to end all square, however, Martin Cremona
invented a winner with time ticking away for a 1-0 win. Next up where Qala
St. J. Ghajnsielem scored early in this game and thus avoided the complications that had arisen in their
earlier cup encounter. The 6-1 win was a relief from the asphyxiating
series of close games that the Blacks have played so far.
This
blow-out
win aside, the Blacks seem to be having trouble creating chances and putting
away the chances they create. Aloy Ihebulu and Dione Lautier have yet to
develop the kind of understanding that is essential for a successful
partnership. Errol Grima looks unhappy on the left wing. Frank Buttigieg has
yet to hit any high notes on the right flank. Central midfield is free
riding on the dominance of Martin Cremona. Defensively, Ghajnsielem seem
solid. Even here, however, there seem to be drops in concentration at the
back in every match. All three goals conceded so far can be logged as
totally avoidable.
Nadur's
challenge has been gathering steam. The Youngsters registered three wins
this month beating Xaghra, Zebbug and Victoria Hotspurs. With their loss
to the Youngsters, Zebbug have
lost their way a little, after a winning start. There is some trouble in
their camp and there is talk that they will be replacing their foreigner. The G.F.A.
has granted them a reprieve by rescheduling their
match with Ghajnsielem for later in the season due to a conflict of
fixtures with Gozo F.C. On their part The Tigers have made
life difficult for themselves by losing to Hotspurs at the death and by dropping
two points to Qala conceding another last gasp goal. Xewkija had earlier
lost in similar fashion to the Blacks both in the cup
and the league.
Accompanying
Xewkija in the nether regions of the division are the teams that were
tipped to struggle in the pre-season: Xaghra U., Victoria H. and Qala St.
