The
civil and religious history of the locality of Ghajnsielem
is centred around the spring which brings the name of Hani
Salem. This is known due to a document, which was written
by the first parish priest of the locality. The story says
that a certain Anglu Grech, gave water every evening to
his herd, while also saying the rosary, since he was very
devout towards the virgin Mary. One day the story affirms
that the virgin Mary talked to him and commanded him to
make a statue under the title of Loreto.

The
Custody of the Franciscan Friars took an important decision in
its chapter of the 1899 to build a convent and a college in
Gozo. With the approval of the Gozitan Bishop Mons Giovanni M.
Camilleri OSA, they established themselves in the locality of
Ghajnsielem. The Friars came to Gozo in the 22 of November of
the same year. The mind behind this project was that of the
custodian Anton M. Cesal whom eventually with some other
friars decided to dedicate the convent and the church to Saint
Anthony of Padova. Read
