The
civil and religious history of the locality of Ghajnsielem
is centred around the spring which brings the name of Hani
Salem. This is known due to a document, which was written
by the first parish priest of the locality. The story says
that a certain Anglu Grech, gave water every evening to his
herd, while also saying the rosary, since he was very devout
towards the virgin Mary. One day the story affirms that the
virgin Mary talked to him and commanded him to make a statue
under the title of Loreto. Apart from that, she also showed
him a place where to build the church, which today is found
as the ancient church of Ghajnsielem. In 1810 there was the
need of church and in January 1812 the project commenced.
Eventually it was blessed on the 9 of September of the same
year by the parish-priest Scasciato. On the next Sunday for
the first time the feast was organised. The collective wish
of the habitants was that to have a parish of their own, this
was eventually granted by Pope Pius IX, whom with the hard
work of Fr. Anton Cauchi the church on the 20 of Januray 1855
was given the title of a parish. The statue was made in Marsielle
by the company Galard & Fils and was brought to Ghajnsielem
on the 14 of October 1866. In 1920 a restoration on statue
took place and the same dress of the statue was gilded. In
the old parish church we find different works of art of great
value, mostly those of Guzeppi Cali. As time went by, there
was the necessity of a larger church, on the 28 of October
1920 the architect Mallia was given the job for this project.
The first stone was placed by the Gozitan Bishop Mons Mikiel
Gonzi on the 23 of October 1923. In the process of the construction
we find differeent builders, the first one was Frangisk Farrugia,
the second Wenzu Borg, the third Tony Vella, the fourth Joseph
Dimech etc... As what happened due to the builders we also
find alot of change in the architects of the church examples
are Guze D'Amato, Joseph Mizzi and Joe Ellul Vincenti. The
new parish of Ghajnsielem was finished and blessed on the
27 of August 1978 by the Bishop Nikol G Cauchi, the following
year also the belfry was ready and blessed eventually by Mons
Mikiel Gonzi on the 29 of August 1979 whom fifty five years
before had blessed the first stone. The new church was consacrated
on the 13 of August 1989. On the 3 of September 1965 the parish
was given the dignity of archparish. The history of the archparish
of Ghajnsielm gives us nine parish-priests and two archpriests.
