The newly refurbished main
hall
The
unexpected news received
last June that the musical
archive will not be finished
in time for inauguration
during the feast did not
dampen the enthusiasm or
derail the preparations for
this year. Instead, the
executive committee decided
to focus all its energy on
finishing the main hall. And
in just a few weeks, the
hall was impressively
completed down to the last
detail in time for Tuesday's
inauguration. The fully
equipped hall is now
expected to be used for all
major functions and social
events held in Ghajnsielem.

St Joseph Band welcomes the bells in
Ghajnsielem
The new
bells which are set to dominate the
towering belfry of the Ghajnsielem
Parish Church arrived today after a
long trip from Cornille-Havard bell
foundry in Normandy, France. The set
of eight bells were
transported on a trailer aboard the
M.V. Malita ferry and departed from
Cirkewwa at 6.00pm. The
trailer, accompanied by a carcade
and hundreds of revellers, arrived
slowly to Chambray Street where the
St Joseph Band welcomed the bells
playing the 'Viva x-Xemx' with the
Ghajnslemizi celebrating and singing
together. The
bells were then carried to the main
square where slowly, one by one,
they were placed on pillars
purposely prepared for their
arrival. The St Joseph Band will
once again be in service for the
blessing of the new bells on Sunday

It was the end
of an era for St. Joseph Band as Mikiel Ciangura,
the last member of
the first band

formed back in 1928, passed away early this morning at
the age of 93.
Mikieli joined

under the direction of Mons De Piro who was also the
first director. During this period, Mikiel also spend
some time in another institute in Malta where he
continued to develop his formation. Mons De
Piro wanted him to continue to further his education and he
decided to join the Birkirkara Oratory as an aspirant. But
he later changed his mind and returned to the St Joseph
Institute in Hamrun where he started to learn how to sew.
During the period he spend in Hamrun, he had the opportunity
to learn music. When Mons De
Piro opened the Gozo institute, Mikiel Ciangura returned to
Gozo. Meanwhile, Mons De Piro
was seen arriving from Malta with a big parcel in his hands.
This parcel contained the first musical instruments, which were
going to be used by the yet unborn St. Joseph Band. Among the
first students one finds Mikiel Ciangura from Ghajnsielem, Pinu
Gatt from Sannat and Kristinu Gatt from Nadur. These were all
young boys residing at the Orphanage during that time. The first
instrument that Mikiel Ciangura played was the cornet. He later
learned the clarinet and then the basso. On Tuesday, 26th August 2008,
Mikiel Ciangura was presented with a commemorative gift to on
the 80th Anniversary of the St Joseph Band. The gift was handed

Gieh Ghajnsielem' for his contribution and involvement in the
Ghajnsielem community particularly the St Joseph Band
and his voluntary work at the Ghajnsielem parish. In
that occasion, Mikiel Ciangura gave a short emotional
speech where he thanked God for giving
him spirit to live at such age and also thanked all those around
him for all the support that they always give him.
The St Joseph Band will
