Christmas Even
Procession from 'Ta Passi' fields
An ideal weather triggered
many Ghajnslemizi to leave their homes on Christmas Eve
and enjoy the Purcissjoni tal-Bambin (Baby Jesus
procession), which is organized annually by the
Ghajnsielem MUSEUM branches. This year, for the first
time, the procession started from the Nativity Village
at 'Ta Passi' fields. Children and adults, together with
the St Joseph Band, then accompanied the statue of Baby
Jesus through Fawwara street, the Old Apparition Square,
Independence Square and finally ending in the main
square. The traditional procession was introduced by
MUSEUM-founder Dun Gorg Preca in 1921 in Hamrun.

Mikiel Ciangura
awarded 'Gieh Ghajnsielem'
90-year-old Mikiel Ciangura was awarded the 14th edition
of the 'Premju Gieh Ghajnsielem' for his contribution
towards the development of the Ghajnsielem community
particularly the St Joseph Band and his voluntary work
at the Ghajnsielem parish.
Mayor Francis Cauchi
handed the award during a special
ceremony held at the St
Joseph Band Club Concert Hall. In his speech, the Mayor
said that it was an honour for the Ghajnsielem Local
Council to award a person who was part of the first
bandsmen that formed the St Joseph Band back in 1928. In
fact Mr Caingura is the only person still alive who was
part of the band formed by Mons De Piro.
In a short emotional
speech, Mikiel Ciangura thanked God for giving him
spirit to live at such age and also thanked all those
around him for all the support that they always give
him.

Committee members
visit the sick and elderly
The mayor together
with representatives of the St
Joseph Band Club and Ghajnsielem F.C. continued their
yearly Christmas tradition by visiting the elderly who
are either sick or housebound or both.
It was
interesting to note that practically all
parishioners were listening
to 'Radju Lauretana'
which
certainly helps
to bring into their homes the activities of the village.
Many
wanted to offer refreshments as they narrated
their life
experiences while bringing back memories of the old
times. The happiness that these visits brought to these
people was tangible and
nothing surpasses the importance of home visiting.

Liturgical Feast
of Our Lady of Loreto
Ghajnsielem marked 'Jum Ghajnsielem' with a procession
commemorating the feast of Our Lady of Loreto. This took
place on the eve of the liturgical feast. The
St Joseph Band Club accompanied the statue of the Black
Madonna around the main streets ending with a bonfire
which was lit in the main square - a tradition started
just last year. The
procession was broadcasted live on Radju Lauretana.
This is only the second time that the Black
Madonna is being taken out for the procession.
The statue was acquired in Rome
and paid for by Frangisk Mizzi in 1924. The building of
the new parish church has been under its protection and
in fact, it was taken inside the old church on 13th
September 1924, on the eve of the laying of the
foundation stone of the new church.

stored in the Musical Archive as a way to reciprocate
for the donations.

Maj Anthony
Aquilina biography book
The
village of Ghajnsielem and in particular, the feast of
Our Lady of Loreto, will feature prominently in a new
biography book dedicated to the life of the famous
Maltese Musical Conductor, Maj. Anthony Aquilina.
Ghajnsielem's feast was one of Aquilina's favourites and
in fact he composed several marches such as 'Viva x-Xemx'
and 'Il-Madonna ta' Loreto' which are still
synonymous with the feast of Our Lady of Loreto.
The
“Duke of Connaught” Band Club of Birkirkara for example,
in the 1940's and early 1950's used to take such an
important part on the Ghajnsielem feast under the baton
of Mro. Anthony Aquilina.
Several members of the St Joseph Band Club committee
will be present for the official launch of the book
which will take place on the 31st of May. The name of
this biography is "Is-Surmast tal-Marci Maltin". His
marches feature prominently on several cassettes and CDs
which the St Joseph Band launched in recent years. Click
on 'CD
and Cassettes' section to listen to these
marches.

Feast of St
Joseph celebrated
On Sunday afternoon, the Ghajnsielem
parish celebrated the feast of St. Joseph the Worker, better
known in Maltese as 'San Guzepp Haddiem'. An orchestra,
with the participation of Lauretana Choir accompanied the High
Mass which started at 5.00pm. The St Joseph Band Club then accompanied the
procession around the main streets of Ghajnsielem.
The feast of
St. Joseph the Worker was established by Pope Pius XII in 1955
in order to Christianize the concept of labour and give to all
workmen a model and a protector. By the daily labour in his
shop, offered to God with patience and joy, St. Joseph
provided for the necessities of his holy spouse and of the
Incarnate Son of God, and thus became an example to all
labourers. St. Joseph is also the patron of the Ghajnsielem
Band Club.

works related to the Holy week. The event was held
at old parish church and attracted a good attendance. The band

Debono also directed 'To My Dear Parents' which for the
first time, was composed by himself. The last piece of
music 'Ti Ricordo Per Sempre' was dedicated 'in
Memoriam' to Loreto Zerafa, a bandsman who passed away a
few months.
The pieces were played at an astonishing level of
virtuosity and the conductor rightly brought those

Procession of Our
Lady of Sorrows
Today marks the
devotional beginning of Holy Week. All over the islands,
processions and pilgrimages are held with deep
veneration towards Our Lady of Sorrows and in
Ghajnsielem this was certainly not an exception as
hundreds followed the solemn procession of
Our Lady of Sorrow which went round the main streets of the
village.
The
procession started at 6.00pm and took the form of a pageant
with various participants dressed up in period costumes
to represent Biblical personalities.
It was a day of devotion with several volunteers
participating in this procession as an act of sacrifice
or thanks-giving. The St Joseph Band accompanied the
procession with religious and funeral marches.

2008 Annual
General Meeting
The
Musical Archive project and the Refurbishment of the
Committee Room were high on the agenda as the St Joseph
Band Club held its Annual General Meeting on Friday
evening. Although no elections were held, the members
unanimously gave a vote of confidence to the present
committee whose term expires next year.
In accordance with the statute which was
emended last year, the election for a new committee is
to be held every two years.
President Gino Cauchi gave an evaluation of the work
done by the committee during the last twelve months
while thanking all members and individuals who regularly
contributed time and energy to the club. After the
president's speech, Kevin Cauchi, the club's secretary
gave a detailed account of the projects and activities
held during 2007. Some of the projects include:
| |
- Five new musical
instruments
- Three televisions (1 Plasma 50" and 2
LCD 32") to be enjoyed in the Bar Area
- Surround Sound System and a DVD Player
which were installed in the Bar Area
- A new PA system which is to be used for
the club's activities
- Financial subsidy for Bandsmen to buy a
new instrument
- Complete refurbishment of all the
premises' windows
- New set of ties and cords for the
Bandsman
- New illumination system for the snooker
table
- New surface for the snooker table |
|
Over major 12 fundraising activates were
organized by the executive committee while the woman's
sub-committee section managed to hold a fundraising
activity at least once
every week. During his speech, Kevin Cauchi also gave a
detailed update about the Musical Archive and the
refurbished committee room and
unveiled a series of initiatives to finance the costs of
these projects. The
administrative report ended with a tribute to bandsman
Loreto Zerafa who passed away a few months ago.
Elvin Tabone read the 2007's
financial report. In just 12 months,
the club managed a
record turnover of Lm59,832 (€139,373). Unfortunately,
expenses were also on the high side but the club ended the year with a positive balance of Lm823
(€1917). For 2008, the committee re-negotiated a new
deal for the leasing of the Bar area for the next three
years while it also managed to sign an exciting
agreement with General Softdrinks Ltd. who are now the
official softdrinks suppliers of the club.
The 80th Anniversary logo was also
unveiled (see image below) while several activities are
being planned for 2008 in order to commemorate this
event.

Committee Room
refurbishment starts
Refurbishment work on the Committee's formal Meeting
Room started today as the St Joseph Band Club is gearing
up in order to welcome the new Musical Archive. The
design and decorations of this room have been assigned
to Richard Young - a well known interior designer who
specializes in antique design. The room will be
inaugurated later this year as part of the 80th
Anniversary activities. More details about these
activities will be announced soon.
Meanwhile work on the Musical Archive is in full swing.
Joseph Tabone is in charge of the woodworks while the
sculpture has been left to Lawrence Grima, an expert in
this field. The archive will be over 20ft wide and over
11ft in height in solid dry mahogany wood.
The
musical archives will hold the compositions that the St
Joseph Band has been collecting for the past 80 years
and will definitely reflect the glorious history of the
Club.
